Apple Music changes policy after Taylor Swift stand

Apple Music changes policy after Taylor Swift stand

Taylor Swift: "Please don't ask us to provide you with our music for no compensation."

Apple Music has reversed its payment policy, a day after the singer Taylor Swift said she was refusing to allow the company to stream her album 1989.
In an open letter to Apple, Swift said she was withholding the record as she was unhappy with the three-month free trial offered to subscribers.
Now Apple says it will pay artists for music streamed during trial periods.
"We hear you @taylorswift13 and indie artists. Love, Apple," tweeted executive Eddy @Cue.
Swift had said the plan was "unfair", arguing Apple had the money to cover the cost.
"I find it to be shocking, disappointing, and completely unlike this historically progressive and generous company," the 25-year-old said, describing Apple as one of her "best partners in selling music".
"Three months is a long time to go unpaid, and it is unfair to ask anyone to work for nothing.
"We don't ask you for free iPhones. Please don't ask us to provide you with our music for no compensation."
Apple Music launches on 30 June. It will cost $9.99 (£6.30) per month in the US for one person or $14.99 for families.
The singer is due to start the UK leg of her world tour on 23 June

After hearing news of the company's decision on Sunday night Swift tweeted: "I am elated and relieved. Thank you for your words of support today. They listened to us.''
Mr Cue said he did not know if the Shake It Off singer would now make her album available on Apple Music - but he praised her for taking a stand.
"When I woke up this morning and I saw Taylor's note that she had written, it really solidified that we needed to make a change," he told Associated Press.
The music industry has generally supported the company bringing its vast music library to paid streaming, and the firm said it would pay 70% of the music subscription revenue to music owners.
It is not the first time Swift has spoken out against streaming music - she pulled her entire catalogue from Spotify last November and had refused to offer 1989 on streaming services, saying the business had "shrunk the numbers of paid album sales drastically".
1989 went on to become one of the biggest-selling albums of 2014 and has sold more than 4.9 million copies in the US alone.
Last week, UK-based independent record label Beggars echoed Swift's comments, saying it struggled "to see why rights owners and artists should bear this aspect of Apple's customer acquisition costs".
It said it did not have an agreement with Apple that would allow it to participate in the new service but hoped the "obstacles to agreement can be removed" in the coming days.

Apple boss Tim Cook hits out at Facebook and Google

Apple boss Tim Cook hits out at Facebook and Google

Apple chief Tim Cook has made a thinly veiled attack on Facebook and Google for "gobbling up" users' personal data.
In a speech, he said people should not have to "make trade-offs between privacy and security".
While not naming Facebook and Google explicitly, he attacked companies that "built their businesses by lulling their customers into complacency".
Rights activists Privacy International told the BBC it had some scepticism about Mr Cook's comments.
"It is encouraging to see Apple making the claim that they collect less information on us than their competitors," Privacy International's technologist Dr Richard Tynan said.
"However, we have yet to see verifiable evidence of the implementation of these claims with regard to their hardware, firmware, software or online services.
"It is crucial that our devices do not betray us."
'We think that's wrong'
Addressing an audience in Washington DC, Mr Cook said: "I'm speaking to you from Silicon Valley, where some of the most prominent and successful companies have built their businesses by lulling their customers into complacency about their personal information.
"They're gobbling up everything they can learn about you and trying to monetise it. We think that's wrong. And it's not the kind of company that Apple wants to be."
Mr Cook had been given a corporate leadership award by the Electronic Privacy Information Centre, a US-based research group.
According to TechCrunch, he later added that Apple "doesn't want your data".

Apple collects some data - such as fitness and location information - via its devices

Google has not commented on Mr Cook's comments specifically, but a spokeswoman referred the BBC to the privacy section of its website, which the company has recently updated.
"Ads are what enable us to make our services like Search, Gmail, and Maps free for everyone," one page reads.
"We do not share information with advertisers in a way that personally identifies you, unless you gave us permission."
Facebook suggested this page outlining how it collects user data.
While Apple does not hold the same wealth of data looked after by Google and Facebook, it does use personal information to target advertising.
A page for marketers on Apple's website offers "400 targeting options" for reaching users.
It reads: "Whether you're looking for moms or business travellers or groups of your own customers, we've got you covered."
Apple's lack of data, when compared with some of its rivals, could be a disadvantage for future devices. Services such as Google Now, which use stored data to predict what information users may need, require vast amounts of personal data to be effective.
Advertising
Mr Cook also spoke at length about encryption.
His company introduced encryption measures by default to its devices late last year, a move heralded by privacy campaigners but heavily criticised by several governments.
Mr Cook hit out at governments that had pressured technology companies to allow for so-called "backdoors" to aid with counter-terrorism and other enforcement.
"There's another attack on our civil liberties that we see heating up every day," Mr Cook said.
"It's the battle over encryption. Some in Washington are hoping to undermine the ability of ordinary citizens to encrypt their data."
He added: "If you put a key under the mat for the cops, a burglar can find it too."

Facebook's photo app will not be available in Europe

Facebook's photo app will not be available in Europe

Facebook's photo-sharing app Moments will not be made available in Europe due to concerns about its use of facial recognition, it has been revealed.

The app, which allows users to share mobile-phone photos with friends without posting them publicly, was launched in the US this week.

The Irish data regulator said that users must be given a choice about whether they want it, with an opt-in.

There is currently no timetable for such a feature, said Facebook.

Richard Allen, Facebook's head of policy in Europe said: "We don't have an opt-in mechanism so it is turned off until we develop one."

Moments arranges the photos on someone's mobile phone into groups, based on when they were taken. The facial recognition technology can identify Facebook friends to whom users can then forward the photos.

Combining data

The social network is taking facial recognition very seriously and announced earlier this year that its DeepFace AI system was powerful enough to identify users with a 97.25% level of accuracy.

But the social network's use of the technology has not gone down well with European and Canadian regulators.

In 2010, Facebook rolled out facial recognition technology to identify people in photos but, two years later, it was forced to withdraw the technology from Europe, after Ireland's data protection commission highlighted privacy issues.

At the time, the privacy commissioner of Canada said: "Of significant privacy concern is the fact that Facebook has the ability to combine facial biometric data with extensive information about users, including biographic data, location data, and associations with friends."

The system, which is increasingly used by technology and other firms, is the subject of debate in the US too.

Recent talks between privacy organisations and government agencies aimed at creating a code of conduct around facial recognition technology broke down after they failed to reach agreement.

"At a base minimum, people should be able to walk down a public street without fear that companies they've never heard of are tracking their every movement - and identifying them by name - using facial recognition technology," the privacy groups said in a joint statement. "Unfortunately, we have been unable to obtain agreement even with that basic, specific premise."

Facebook faced other privacy questions this week when it was revealed that the Belgian data protection watchdog was taking it to court over claims that it tracks people's internet activity outside its site.

6 Of The Most Dangerous International Airports

6 Of The Most Dangerous International Airports

Generally, a comfortable journey to your destination sets the tone for a satisfying vacation, while a rough landing chafes us enough to ruin our mood throughout the trip. However, you will agree that there is an element of thrill in enduring a rough ride. Particularly, when the seatbelt light goes on, the air-hostess keeps repeating the safety guidelines, and you feel your co-passengers go anxious in their seats – there is an undeniable spike of excitement in all this.

1. SVALBOARD AIRPORT, LONGYEAR

Dangerous Airports

Svalboard is mostly ice and snow. As you arrive at this runway which has been built using permafrost, you will see nothing but shifting ice on the water and loads of snow. The airport is risky not just because of the slippery nature of the runway, but also because of unpredictable climactic situations, making landing pretty difficult.

2. GIBRALTAR AIRPORT, GIBRALTAR, BRITISH OVERSEAS TERRITORY

Dangerous Airports

The runway is so small that it actually uses a portion of a busy street. You will not recognize that this is a runway until you see a plane landing or taking off.

3. JUANCHO E YRAUSQUIN, SABA, NETHERLANDS

Dangerous Airports

With a distance of just 1300 feet, Juancho is the shortest commercial runway on earth. However, being the sole airport in Saba it fills a crucial role in the day-to-day lives of the people residing here. One tiny error, and the plane could possibly land in water rather than on land. The airport is a major challenge even for experienced pilots.

4. COURCHEVEL INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, COURCHEVEL, FRANCE

Dangerous Airports

Courchevel Airport has a hill situated in the center of the 1700-foot runway. Courchevel is a well-known ski resort, but reaching this place is no easy task. The French Alps, although beautiful, can be a difficult task for any pilot who is looking to land his flight at the Courchevel International Airport.

5. PRINCESS JULIANA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, SIMPSON BAY, SAINT MAARTEN

Dangerous Airports

This airport is located right next to a tourist beach. The plane has to hover alarmingly close to a busy beachfront and a much busier road right before landing. People on the beach have a risk of hearing problems once the plane flies down with tremendous noise. People and commuters on the road seem at high risk of getting blown away by strong jet blast.

6. LUKLA AIRPORT, NEPAL

Dangerous Airports

The airport at Lukla, Nepal is at the top of the list of most dangerous airports in a newly released survey by History channel. Lukla serves as the base camp from where trekkers to the Himalaya start. Naturally, the airport in Lukla gets a great deal of traffic. Given its risky conditions, it sees a lot of fatalities, as well.

2016 BMW 7 Series officially unveiled

2016 BMW 7 Series officially unveiled

After countless teasers and unofficial leaks, BMW has finally pulled the wraps off the new 7 Series saloon. While the new 7 Series might not look radically different from the outgoing model, it gets a whole bunch of cutting-edge technologically updates to make it capable of fighting other premium saloons like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Jaguar XJ and the Audi A8.
Internally called G11/G12, the new 7 Series is built on a ‘Carbon Core’ structure, which blends carbon-fibre reinforced plastic, magnesium, aluminium and steel. Along with other weight saving measures, this revised chassis helped BMW shave off 130 kilograms. BMW will continue to offer the 7 Series in two body avatars – standard wheelbase (G11) and long wheelbase (G12), which measures 140mm more in length. The xDrive four-wheel-drive system is offered as an optional extra in select variants though four-wheel-steering will be a standard fitment.
The exhaustive feature list of the new 7 Series now includes a new park assist system with 3D imagery, traffic jam assistant, remote parking, BMW Laserlight with Selective Beam. One of the biggest highlights of the new 7 Series, however, is a ‘3D sensor’ which identifies the driver’s hand gestures to allow access to different functionalities of the car.
Under the bonnet, the 7 Series will get the option of either a 3.0-litre inline turbocharged six petrol or a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 petrol or a 3.0-litre inline six diesel mill. The company also revealed three new plug-in hybrid variants for the 7 Series, which are the first of their kind in the saloon’s history. These variants are available with a 2.0-litre petrol engine, which works together with a 95 horsepower electric motor.
BMW announced that the production of the new 7 Series has already started at its plant in Dingolfing, Germany. With deliveries in the US and Europe expected to commence in the next couple of months, we can expect the new 7 Series to be launched here by the end of this year or early 2017.

Mercedes-Benz to reveal GLC on June 17

Mercedes-Benz to reveal GLC on June 17

Mercedes-Benz has announced that it will unveil the GLC crossover on June 17. In essence, the next generation GLK, this new SUV will be produced for both RHD and LHD markets for the first time. In the run up to the unveiling, Mercedes has released some preliminary details with regards to the mechanicals of the vehicle.
We have already seen the car with almost no camouflage and have quite a good idea of what the external design will be like. Under Mercedes-Benz’s new naming convention, the GLC is basically the SUV model of the C-Class range and so has the same cabin and feature list as the sedan.
The mechanical feature list that the German automaker has revealed for the GLC includes Air Body Control, Dynamic Select and permanent 4MATIC AWD system. The company also says that the engines powering this vehicle will be 19 per cent more fuel efficient than the ones in the outgoing models.
The Stuttgart-based automaker has also revealed a GLC coupe which will be shown in production form next year. Like the GLE coupe has been created to rival the BMW X6, this smaller vehicle has been created to rival the BMW X4.
Now the bigger question, when will we get the GLC in India? We believe that the German automaker will bring the SUV to the Indian market a few months after it has been launched in Europe. In all probability they will locally assemble it now that the production capacity at the Pune plant has been expanded.
